Short answer
Yes. If the tiles themselves are solid and not loose or cracked, damaged grout can usually be removed and replaced without retiling. The old grout is cut out of the damaged joints, new grout goes in, and the joints are sealed. Retiling is only needed when tiles are loose, broken, or there is water damage underneath.
What causes grout to crack or go missing?
Grout wears out from normal life. Floors move a little as a house settles, harsh cleaners break grout down, and water gets into joints that were never sealed. On the north shore, humid summers off the Sound keep bathrooms damp for longer, and that moisture works on grout year after year.
Cracks and gaps usually show up first in high-traffic paths and around tubs and showers.
How do you know if the tile is still worth saving?
Tap the tiles near the damaged grout. A solid sound usually means the tile is still bonded. A hollow sound, tiles that rock when you step on them, cracked tiles, or soft spots in the floor point to a bigger problem underneath.
If the tile is solid, grout repair is usually the right fix and costs far less than tearing out the floor.
How does grout repair work?
Damaged grout is cut out of the joints, the joints are cleaned, and new grout is packed in and smoothed to match. At Long Island Steam Cleaners, tile and grout work is a total floor restoration: the tile is cleaned with truck-mounted steam, grout is repaired where needed, and the grout is color sealed so it looks even and resists stains. See our grout repair and tile and grout cleaning service pages for details.
Does grout repair work on every kind of tile?
Steam cleaning suits ceramic, porcelain and cement grout, which covers most kitchens and baths in north shore homes. Natural stone like marble or travertine needs a closer look, so we check it at the estimate before recommending a method. If the tile is loose or the subfloor is damaged, we will tell you that grout repair alone is not the right fix.
