How Do You Know When a Shower Needs Regrouting?

From the crew at Long Island Steam Cleaners, Miller Place, NY · 2026-10-26

Short answer

A shower needs regrouting when the grout is cracked, crumbling, missing, or stained dark in a way cleaning does not fix. Other signs are loose caulk at the corners and tub line, and water stains on the ceiling or wall behind the shower. Catching it early usually means a regrout, recaulk and seal instead of a full shower replacement.

What are the warning signs in the grout?

Look for hairline cracks, gaps where grout has washed out, grout that crumbles when you press it with a fingernail, and dark lines that stay dark after a good scrub. Mildew that keeps coming back in the same joints is another sign that water is getting into the grout instead of running off it.

Why does caulk matter as much as grout?

Corners and the line where tile meets the tub or shower pan move slightly every time someone steps in. Those joints should be caulked, not grouted, because caulk flexes. When caulk peels, yellows or pulls away, water can get behind the tile.

Recaulking is part of a proper shower restoration, not an extra.

What happens if you wait too long?

Water that gets behind the tile can soak the wall, loosen tiles and lead to mold you cannot see. In north shore homes, a damp bathroom in humid summers makes this worse. Signs it has gone further include loose or hollow-sounding tiles, soft spots in the wall, peeling paint outside the shower, or a stain on the ceiling below the bathroom.

What does a shower restoration include?

Long Island Steam Cleaners restores showers by regrouting, recaulking and sealing. The tile is deep cleaned, damaged grout is replaced, old caulk comes out and new caulk goes in, and the grout is sealed to help it resist water and stains. Related questions

How often should a shower be regrouted?

There is no set schedule. Regrout when you see cracks, gaps or crumbling grout. Sealing the grout and keeping caulk in good shape helps it last longer between repairs.

Can mold in shower grout be cleaned, or does it need regrouting?

Surface mildew can often be cleaned off. If dark spots return quickly or the grout is soft or cracked, regrouting and sealing is the longer-lasting fix.

Should grout or caulk go in shower corners?

Caulk. Corners and the joint where tile meets the tub move slightly, and caulk flexes with that movement while grout cracks.
