Short answer
Grout color sealing coats clean grout lines with a sealer that also adds color. It makes old, uneven or stained grout look uniform again and helps the grout resist stains and moisture. It is the final step after deep cleaning and any grout repair, not a replacement for either.
How is color sealing different from a clear sealer?
A clear sealer soaks into the grout to help it resist stains but leaves the color as it is, stains and all. A color sealer covers the grout lines with a tinted coat, so grout that has darkened, faded or turned blotchy over the years ends up one even color. You can match the original color or pick a new one to freshen up the room.
When does color sealing make the biggest difference?
It helps most on light grout that has gone gray or brown in traffic paths, kitchens where spills have left darker patches, and bathrooms where some joints were repaired and no longer match. It is also a good fit for north shore homes with older tile kitchens and baths that are in good shape but look tired.
What has to happen before grout is color sealed?
The grout has to be clean and sound. Sealing over dirt locks the dirt in, and sealing over cracked grout does not fix the crack. At Long Island Steam Cleaners, tile and grout work is a total floor restoration: the tile is cleaned with truck-mounted steam, grout is repaired where needed, and then the grout is color sealed.

How do you keep color-sealed grout looking good?
Sweep or vacuum regularly so sand and grit do not wear the surface, especially in winter when salt and sand get tracked in. Mop with a neutral cleaner made for tile. Avoid bleach, vinegar and other harsh cleaners that can break down grout and sealer over time.
